Two people have been shot at an Eastside clothing store, Body Gear. – Indianapolis Star

An employee of an Eastside clothing store was fatally shot this afternoon and a customer was wounded when gun violence erupted during a suspected shoplifting.

Two people are in custody following the shooting at Body Gear, 2816 E. 38th St., the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department reported. Four other suspects were being sought.

“Right now, preliminary information we have is that there was a disturbance inside of the store over stolen items, and then there were shots fired as the employees tried to engage the suspects,” IMPD Sgt. Kendale Adams said. “We were able to quickly apprehend two suspects who did have clothing from the store … and we are looking for up to four additional suspects. Right now the information on the four additional suspects is kind of sketchy.”

The Body Gear employee was taken to Eskenazi Hospital in critical condition and later died, authorities said. The other person was in good condition.

A man who answered the phone and identified himself as a Body Gear staff member shortly after the shooting said the other person who was shot was a customer and the staff member was shot in the head. The man declined to give his name.

About a dozen people were in the store during the shooting, Adams said. Police did not say whether the victims and suspects were male or female.

As of 5 p.m., police tape still surrounded the parking lot of the strip mall where Body Gear is located. Residents filled the adjacent lots and looked on in shock, anger and confusion as officers investigated.

“I just can’t believe they would do that in the middle of the day … right here. I live down the street. … I walked over from here,” said resident Sherae Moore as she stood just outside the police tape. “Kids live in the this area, older folk live in this area, and it just don’t feel safe anymore. I want to get out. I hear about shootings all the time now … stuff you don’t see on the news.”

The incident is the fifth shooting reported in the city within a 16-hour period. IMPD officers responded to four shootings overnight reported between 11:30 p.m. Saturday and 3 a.m. today.

Nearby resident Derrick Lawrence said he heard about the other shootings when he woke up this morning. He rushed to Body Gear because he thought a friend of his was walking in the area.

“It’s crazy man,” he said. “It makes you mad. I’ve lived here for 10 years, and I’ve never had problems. But when stuff like this happens, you realize it’s not getting better. I’ve been lucky, I guess.”
