The top tier of the Pac-12 took care of business this weekend. Oregon St., and UCLA both swept their series, and Oregon and Washington came away with series wins.
So here’s how the Pac looks in this week’s baseball polls. Links to each poll are at the top, and numbers in () are last week’s ranking:
USA Today is the only poll that lists the number of votes teams outside of the top 25 get, and Washington currently sits 39th. We also know they are somewhere between 26th and 49th in the NCBWA poll.
The Huskies are really the only other team in the conference that seems like they’ll ever have a shot at cracking the rankings at this point, which is not a good sign.
Arizona fans should know that past opponents Seton Hall, Mississippi State, and UC Santa Barbara all appear in various rankings right now.
Around the rest of the college baseball landscape, Florida St. and South Carolina are the consensus top-two teams in the country. The Seminoles swept highly-ranked NC State this weekend to put them solidly at the top or second in each ranking. The Gamecocks went 2-1 vs. Ole Miss this weekend, but are still riding high thanks to a three-game domination of in-state rival Clemson a couple of weeks ago.
Who are some of the west coast teams to watch not in the Pac-12? Cal Poly is ranked 11th or higher in every poll. Cal State Fullerton had a rough weekend, but the Titans are still 13th or higher in every poll.
And then there’s San Diego. The Toreros cracked the rankings in every poll this week. The last two weeks, they took 2-of-3 from Oklahoma St. in Stillwater, beat Cal State Fullerton at home, and dominated BYU in Provo. Even though Kris Bryant is gone from last year’s team, it seems like USD is doing just fine.
