DETROIT, Mich. — The fourth-seeded Penn State Nittany Lions won their second consecutive double-overtime game to capture their first-ever Big Ten Hockey Tournament with a 2-1 win over Wisconsin on Saturday at Joe Louis Arena. Liam Folkes scored his second goal of the game, 6:43 into the second overtime to clinch the conference’s automatic qualifier to the NCAA Tournament.
Freshman goalie Peyton Jones was named the Tournament Most Outstanding Player after he made 51 saves in his second consecutive marathon. Folkes and Erik Autio were also named to the team from the Nittany Lions.
Folkes opened the scoring with a first-period goal off a feed from Brandon Biro with 4:23 left in the period. Wisconsin tied the game at 1-1 on a Matt Utaski goal with 8:15 left in regulation.
Penn State, which advanced to the Big Ten Championship game with a double-overtime win over top-seeded Minnesota on Friday night, had the magic touch again on Saturday as Folkes tallied his second of the night for the championship.
